Umeme Yaka being the largest distributor of electricity in Uganda is literally the pride of Uganda. Umeme was initialized in 2004 and within a few years Umeme Yaka Uganda became the biggest and best distributor of electric power in terms of the number of consumers, area covered and gained assets. Umeme was soon formed after the government of Uganda sold out the UEDCL (Uganda electricity Distribution Company limited). It is promptly enlisted in the USE (the Uganda securities exchange), the NSE (Nairobi securities exchange) and also it is not anymore personally owned.

Umeme Yaka Uganda is very strict with its keen objectives and rich motives. It has been constantly working on improving the quality and quantity of supply to its customers, which is one of its key motives. It’s also trying hard for increased customer satisfaction by testing its own standards every time. By 2014 it had almost set a class and standard of its own that yielded an asset worth USD 426.3 million, ever since then the company is growing at a stable rate. An important shareholder of this company is the Investec Asset Management. Umeme Yaka has now promised to give a flawless operation, ready maintenance and a frequent upgrading. The company literally does not leave any stones unturned when it comes to expanding its network distribution. Apart from retailing electric power to the consumers in Uganda, Umeme is pretty determined in improvising its efficiency in the electric power distribution system.

Umeme Yaka is also inherent with values like the transparent servicing of the customers, safety for both the consumers and the staff, straightforward dealings, precedence to the employees over the services etc. These values are strictly inflicted within the Umeme system. Keeping the values aside the company also focuses on loss reduction by setting a definite percentage and improving the overall cost efficiency. It has been working hard for a better revenue collection that is over one hundred percent. The personnel working, here are exceptionally skilled in providing its consumers with exceptional facilities.

The umeme yaka is known for its legitimate rates and quality of services. Their billing system is always optimized and their management of the utility is very much stable. They invest a large portion of their capital to improve the less efficient areas of supply and for safeguarding the workers at there.

UMEME Yaka

The Umeme Yaka tariffs (Umeme Yaka rates along with the Umeme Yaka codes are as follows:

  • Domestic package with code number 10.1

Suitable for residences, homes, shops and stalls. The metered voltage is low and single phase and the voltage is supplied at 240 volts. With usage span of first 15 kWh in a month costing 150.0 UGX/kWh as best rate and above 15 kWh in a month charging 520.6 UGX/kWh as the best rate. Quarterly tariff adjustment factors are not applicable for this package.

  • Commercial package with code number 10.2/10.3

Suitable for all kinds of small scale industries. The voltage is low metered, a three phase. The load will not exceed 100 amps. A voltage of 415 volts will be supplied. The best tariff rate for the peak hour is 567.7 UGX/kWh, for the shoulder it is 475.0 UGX/kWh, for off peak it is 354.0 UGX/kWh and for average it is 474.4 UGX/kWh. Quarterly tariff adjustment factors are not available for this category as well.

  • Medium industrial package with code 20

It is most suitable for the medium scale industries. The power is served at a low volt of 415 with a maximum demand of 500kVA. The best tariff rate for the peak hour is 542.3 UGX/kWh, for the shoulder it is 452.2 UGX/kWh, for off peak it is 331 UGX/kWh and for average it is 452 UGX/kWh. Quarterly tariff adjustment factors are not available for this category as well.

  • Large industrial package with code 30

It is most suitable for large industries seeking more power and voltage. From 11,000 volts to 33,000 volts. With a maximum demand of 10,000kVA. The best tariff rate for the peak hour is 373.7 UGX/kWh, for the shoulder it is 311.6 UGX/kWh, for off peak it is 232.5 UGX/kWh and for average it is 310.4 UGX/kWh. Quarterly tariff adjustment factors are not available for this category as well.

  • Street lighting package with code 50

Best suitable for street lighting facilities in towns, cities, municipalities, community and trade centers. The best tariff rate on an average is 588.8 UGX/kWh. Quarterly tariff adjustment factors are not available for this category as well.

Apart from the tariff rates the charges below are also applicable:

  • Monthly charge (Fixed)

For the domestic package, it is 3,360 UGX per month; for commercial package it is 3,360 UGX per month; for the medium industrial package it is 22,400 UGX per month and for the large industrial package it is 70,000 UGX per month.

  • Maximum demand charge

Maximum demand charge for the medium industrial package is 16,644 UGX/kVA per month. For others, up till 2,000kW it is 11,096 UGX/kVA per month and between 2000 and 10, 000 kW it is 5,548 UGX/kVA per month. The reactive energy charge is 40 UGX/kVArh per month and the reactive energy reward is 20 UGX/kVArh per month.

  • Inspection charge

For Domestic package it is 41,500 UGX, for Commercial package it is 48,000 UGX for Medium Industrial package it is 88,000 UGX and for the Large Industrial package it is 118,000.

  • New connection deposits and charges for the Yaka Umeme Uganda.

The Domestic package deposit is 100,000 UGX, for the Commercial package it is 200,000 UGX, for Medium Industrial package it is 1,000,000 UGX and for the Large Industrial package it is 2,000,000 UGX.

Note the deposits do are not inclusive of the connection charges and in case of power theft penalties are applied.

  • Connection Charges (New connection)

No Pole Connection is 98,000 UGX and on Pole Connection is 326,000 UGX.

  • Reconnection charges (For existing customers)

For the Single Phase Customers it is 11,800 UGX and for the Three Phase Customers 25,200 UGX.

  • Theft penalty

For Domestic Consumers it is 295,000 UGX combined with the rate of unpaid consumption, for Commercial consumers it is 200,000 UGX cum rate of unpaid consumption, for Medium Industrial consumers it is 1,000,000 plus rate of unpaid consumption and for Large Industrial consumers it is 2,000,000 cum rate of the unpaid consumption.
